Bihar Election Dates 2020 : Three phases of voting on Oct 28 Nov 3 & 7 results on Nov 10

Bihar Election Dates 2020 will take place in three phases on October 28, November 3 and 7 while the counting of votes and the results will be declared on November 10, the Election Commission confirmed on Friday (September 25).

The reason behind having the polls in fewer phases this time is to minimise the movement of security personnel due to the Covid-19 threat. With this confirmation, the Model Code of Conduct comes into effect in the state. Bihar’s 243-member Assembly is due to expire on October 29, 2020.

Coming to the process, 71 Assembly constituencies in 16 districts will go to polls in the first phase of voting while 94 constituencies in 17 districts will go to polls in the second phase. The last phase will see voting in 78 constituencies of 15 districts.

Addressing the media in New Delhi, Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner, said elections demand large scale deployment of security forces. Hence they have reduced the number of phases to three as it will ensure minimum movement over long distances.

Despite the Covid-19 outbreak, several countries have carried out elections. But CEC Arora reckoned the Bihar polls are likely to be the largest elections conducted during the pandemic provided that there are 72.9 million voters in the state.

Because of the pandemic, a number of measures have been taken for campaigning and polling to ensure everyone’s safety.

Election Commission guidelines for Bihar elections:

  • Polling hours have been stretched by an hour. Voting will take place from 7 am to 6 pm instead of the usual 5 pm.
  • Covid-19 patients and suspected cases will be allowed to cast their votes in the final hour.
