Since the day Bollywood actor Rhea Chakraborty got arrested for consuming drugs by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), patriarchy has become a topic of discussion.
For the same reason, many from the film industry are sharing this quote: “ROSES ARE RED VIOLETS ARE BLUE LET’S SMASH THE PATRIARCHY ME AND YOU”
But the question arises – Why this entire issue became about patriarchy?
In this post, Weekly Express will explain how it is patriarchal.
It is patriarchal because there is no conclusive evidence of Rhea’s role in Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide case. Despite that, she is being treated as a criminal, which reflects that our society blames women for the failures of men.
It is worth mentioning here that Bollywood actor Rhea Chakraborty isn’t the first one to go through this nightmare.
In the 1990s, veteran actress Rekha was blamed for her husband Mukesh’s suicide.
Recently, Facebook user Ritika Bhattacharya narrated what happened with Rekha then.
According to his post, Mukesh used Rekha’s dupatta to hang himself and what followed was a series of events quite similar to what is happening today with Rhea.
Rekha, reportedly, was unaware of the fact that Mukesh was having chronic depression. However, after his demise, everyone turned against her.
If the post is to be believed, Mukesh’s mother said, “Woh daayan mere bete ko kha Gayi” which translates “That witch took away my son’s life”. This certainly shows the similarities between Rekha and Rhea’s case and the patriarchal mindset of Indian society.
Since the second a lady is hitched ‘into’ a family, it is her ‘obligation’ to bring good karma and long life for the man. In the event that anything awful transpires, it consequently turns into her issue. As per the post, Mukesh’s brother called Rekha a gold-digger.
” He was unable to endure what Rekha was doing to him. Presently what does she need, does she need our cash? Now what does she want, does she want our money?”, he had asked back then.
Furthermore, the Indian film industry didn’t take a stand for Rekha either. She was no longer considered an ideal lady to do the roles which portray women as ‘Bharat ki Nari or insaf ki Devi’. Those were reportedly director Subhash Ghai’s remarks.
From Yasser Usman's Rekha The Untold Story:On October 2, 1990, Mukesh, Rekha's husband, decided to take away his…
At the time when she was grieving her husband’s loss, the entire world blamed her instead of consoling.
Just like Rheas, the media didn’t spare Rekha either as it came up with headlines such as The Black Widow and The Macabre Truth behind Mukesh’s Suicide.
You noticed the patriarchy, now?
Coming to Sushant Singh Rajput’s case, the MS Dhoni biopic-actor certainly deserves justice. But it doesn’t mean Rhea Chakraborty doesn’t deserve a fair trial.
Rhea Chakraborty was charged with organizing drugs for her late boyfriend Sushant. There is no mention in the court papers of her using drugs.
The charges are so serious that she might have to spend 10 years in jail.
